Plant Appraisal & Valuation
9:00am-3:30pm TBA
Landscape plants are assets, and there is a science -- and an art -- to assigning a dollar value to those assets. Nature does not provide price tags, however. That's why this new one-day class, taught by gifted arboriculture instructors Ted Szczawinski and Lee Gilman, explains and demonstrates the four key variables that determine the dollar value of a landscape plant -- size, species, condition, and location. The challenge of the valuation process is assigning specific numbers and weights to each factor. You will learn how to apply the appraisal methodology for those inevitable cases where landscape plants have been damaged or destroyed. These skills also are critical in insurance reimbursements, real estate transactions, tree inventories and plant condemnation actions. http://www.cpe.rutgers.edu/courses/current/al0809ca.html

Plant Health Care and Prescription Fertilization
9:00-3:30pm TBA Customizing treatments for nutrient deficiencies is not just good plant health care, it is also a valuable new service offered by conscientious arborists. Yet, the complexity of the issues and products can be intimidating. Which products are truly worthwhile and which are just sales hype? This class will provide answers on a wide range of issues, such as: water soluble vs. WIN; bio-stimulants; mycorrhiza or compost teas; trunk injections or implants; pH; micro nutrients and proper timing of applications. Cultural, biological and chemical control strategies and the Growing Degree Day (GDD) method of tracking pests and diseases will be outlined and detailed for effective use and marketing. Hands-on outdoor demonstrations will be provided (weather permitting).

Plannning to Plant, Learn Best Management Practices for Success! |
Tree Planting and Installation
9:00-3:30pm TBA Proper planting is far more than just digging holes; it can literally determine life and death for a tree. You must first match the plant with the conditions of your site and then determine proper excavation depth and width. You also need to identify girdling roots and the location of the trunk flare, then use a suitable backfill to create a good soil structure. You will learn how to take control of the process with detailed specifications to assist you in evaluating, preserving and remediation of trees on construction sites. Hands-on demonstrations will be provided (weather permitting). To communicate more effectively with residents, elected officials and the media, you will learn new visual tools to create and manage shade tree inventories with GIS (Geographical Information Systems).
You will also review and receive a municipal shade tree ordinance database that is provided to all course participants. In addition, you will learn new technical skills that include: tree selection based on site conditions, size requirements and quality standards; pruning using the new ANSI guidelines; removal; cost and timing strategies; and Plant Health Care featuring safe and effective cultural practices that may add years to your existing urban forest.
